To coincide with Le Monde Béryl opening a pop-up space at 24 Rue Saint Roch in Paris on 24th September and running until 4th November, creative director and co-founder Lily Atherton Hanbury shares some of her favourite spots in the French capital.

1. Porte de Vanves

This flea market in the 14th arrondissement is one of my favourite weekend outings. We try to go early, as it opens around 7am and wander through alleys of vendors before having a late lunch. It’s a brilliant combination of scouting for research, as there is everything here from clothing to antique jewellery and records, while also looking for fun or collectible furniture. And like so much of Paris, it’s good for people watching and running into friends.

2. Galignani

Situated on Rue du Rivoli, Galignani which opened in 1880 was the first English bookstore in Paris and has a lot of charm. Like all the best bookstores, it’s a really wonderful place to get lost in, and is perfect for seeking out reference books for design inspiration, as well as being excellent for locating thoughtful gifts.

3. Chez Georges

This restaurant is a Parisienne institution - it opened in the 1920s - and conjures a very particular take on the city which is completely timeless. My favourite spot to sit is in the window and I love the Sole Meunière.

4. Mendes Wood DM

Obviously Paris is not short of excellent galleries but I think if I was pushed to choose a favourite it would be Mendes Wood DM. The space opened in 2023 over two levels at the 17th Century Hôtel de l’Escalopier in the handsome Place des Vosges. This fall, during Art Basel Paris, the gallery will open a show of works by Precious Okoyomon whose poetic and monumental sculptural works are endlessly fascinating and special. It runs until Dec 6. Don’t miss it.

5.  Crudus

An intimate Italian in the 1st, Crudus is one of those cosy places that you never want to leave. It’s the ideal place to share food - they just keep bringing you delicious plates of anchovy dressed salads and fresh pastas - whether you’re with one other person or a large group. We’ve taken over the place for Le Monde parties or dinners during fashion week, whether intimate or packed dinner, it always hits the right tone

6. Galerie Chenel

This is a real gem and one of my favourite galleries in the world. Run by brilliant and lovely husband and wife, Gladys and Olivier Chenel, who specialise in sculpture and archaeological objects, with a particular emphasis on ancient Roman arts. Opposite the Louvre, and conveniently very near to Le Voltaire, it’s one of the best places to discover and learn about the dialogue between antiquities and contemporary culture. It is an incredibly elegant space and always expertly curated.

7. Le Voltaire

When in Paris, I basically survive on egg mayo and martinis from Le Voltaire with my best friend who basically lives upstairs! It’s a very special spot full of memories and the atmosphere of over a century of artists and writers meeting for probably a very similar experience to ours.

8. Thaddeus Ropac

All of the global Thaddeus Ropac spaces have their own unique sense of beauty - Ely House in London is one of my favourite spaces in the British capital. They have two homes in Paris - one central space in the Marais and one on the borders of the city in Pantin. The latter, an early 20th century ironworks factory, opens a show this autumn of work by French-Chinese artist Yan Pei-Ming, running until Dec 20.
